Solutions & workarounds for Hexen II mapping problems

I am not a skilled mapper by far, and some of those tips & tricks may be known already. I (re?)discovered them on my own because I needed solutions to practical problems I faced while working on Wheel Of Karma: A Tulku Odyssey. So they might be useful to you for your own Hexen II projects as well, who knows...

They come in different flavors:

Mapping T&T involving some HexenC coding (and progs.dat recompilation)
Mapping T&T with no coding
Mapping Academy: not so much T&T, but rather tutorials about overlooked native features in Hexen II
